Maybe those 30 minutes should be compulsory

U.S. Education Secretary Richard Riley, disappointed with the findings of "The 1994 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Reading Report Card," said: "If all parents in America made it their patriotic duty to find an extra thirty minutes to help their children learn ? each and every day ? it would revolutionize American education." (Noted in the Daily Report Card of 3/8/96.)

If we're lucky, Goals 2000 will meet the same fate

According to the Chicago Tribune of 2/4/96 (and noted in the Daily Report Card, 2/9/96) the Illinois Board of Education will stop requiring schools to submit "voluminous" School Improvement Plans. Although some schools spent "thousands of dollars" to send people to seminars on the planning process, or to hire "school improvement coordinators," even the state superintendent of schools conceded that few of the resulting plans were ever actually read.

Couldn't they make it their patriotic duty to find an extra thirty minutes every day to get those things read?
