Part of the power of the Declaration of Independence is that is that the American leaders had the courage to put their names "on the line" for all to see: friends, family, neighbors, customers, and even the King of England!
We apply the same principle to the Public Proclamation for the Separation of School and State. We web-publish the information we believe necessary to maintain credibility with the first time visitor, the media and even our adversaries: Name, City, State, Country, and ZIP or Postal code.
Imagine if the Declaration of Independence had only been initialed, not signed. Imagine if John Hancock had said, "I don't want anybody to know I signed this...some friends and customers could hassle me."
To maintain our credibility, we do not accept endorsements using just initials or false names. If because of professional or personal reasons you don't want to be publicly identified as a supporter of Honest Education, you're welcome to support us with a financial donation. (Please note that donations over $5,000 per year are part of the public record.)
As this movement grows from thousands to hundreds of thousands of Signatories, and then on to millions of Signatories our friends and adversaries will have a valid measure of just how large the "Honest Education Movement" has become.
At some point maybe a million signatures visionary political leaders will choose this issue as their platform. At that time, we'll be able to say "Honest Education is an idea whose time is near."

We also ask for (but do not publish!) your mailing address, your email address, your phone number, and other information so we can keep you informed about what's occurring in the Honest Education movement. The Alliance for the Separation of School & State will use your email address to notify you of local activities.

Less frequently than once a year, we have given or rented our mailing list to other organizations who we believe (a) are promoting Honest Education and (b) you likely will want to know about.

Some Signatories of the Proclamation are willing to be called by a journalist doing a story on Honest Education. If you are willing to have your phone number address publicized on our website for this purpose, you must specifically approve in the space provided.

We keep a paper copy of each online and paper Signatory, filed by date. If a journalist or adversary ever doubts the validity of a signature, he/she is welcome to visit our office or send an emissary to examine these records. They will find our record keeping tidy and complete.

If you ever decide you would like to remove your name from the list of Signatories, just notify us by email, phone, or regular mail. Only about 1 per 800 Signatories has decided to rescind his/her signature. Some tell us why a minority changed their mind, some decided to run for political office and thought their public stand would be a hindrance to them, and a few have told us they really didn't understand the Proclamation when they signed it.
Whatever the reason, we quickly and quietly remove your name from the online database if you ask.
If we get a call from a member of the media regarding a Signatory, we tell them the date of the original signature. If the person has removed his/her name, we also tell the date of the removal. We do not speculate to the press on the person's reason for requesting removal.
